Hi folks! I hope everybody's having a good summer! Please drop me a line when you know when you're coming and leaving. I plan to get there Friday (the 1st) afternoon. I'll leave the evening of Monday the 4th. Of course, my folks will also be there (parents, Phil, and probably Larissa). We'll be cooking out on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Here's some useful stuff.
Info
The phone number at the lake for the summer 2005 season is 301.387.0686. (It changes every year; apparently it's cheaper to cancel phone service at the end of the summer and sign up anew at the beginning of the summer than to maintain phone service year-round.) The address is 94 Penelacre Lane, Oakland, MD 21550-7648. Monday, July 4th, is a free fishing day (no license required) in the state of Maryland.
Helping Out
As in past years, Katie's parents are requesting that guests help out by bringing food (list forthcoming) as well as helping out with some of the chores like turning the chicken wings over the fire, making salads, scrubbing and wrapping potatoes, loading the dishwasher, unloading the dishwasher, setting the table before meals and clearing it afterwards, washing dishes that don't go in the dishwasher, sweeping the kitchen floor of loose dirt and wiping with the CloroxTM ReadyMopTM when necessary and before leaving, vacuuming the dining and living area when necessary and before leaving, sweeping the steps between the first and second floors, putting chairs around fire, and emptying the garbage can when it's full.
Food
We've got three grilling nights this year.
From Johnstown (for posterity's sake—I imagine none of you are coming from Johnstown anymore):
- Take Route 219 South. When you reach the end of the expressway and get onto 2-lane road (still 219) for about a mile, watch for a right turn toward Garrett and the state prison.
- Follow this road for about 6 miles, past the Piney Run Golf Course and down a steep hill to a stop sign where you want to turn left onto route 653.
- Follow Route 653 down the main street of Garrett to a stop sign where you will turn right and will again be on Route 219 South. You'll see the wind turbines of Green Mountain Energy Wind Farm, a 10,400 kilowatt project owned and operated by National Wind Power and the first utility-scale wind farm in Pennsylvania. Continue on 219 South into Maryland, where 219 will get you onto I-68 West for 2 exits.
From
I-68 West in Maryland:
- Get off I-68 at the exit for 219 South, Oakland, and continue south on 219 through the village of Accident.
- As you approach Deep Creek Lake, still on 219 South, you will pass an antiques store and a boat dealer (among other businesses) on the right, then a Comfort Inn. Just past the Comfort Inn you want to turn right onto Sang Run Road at the Exxon station (there is a marked right turn lane for this road).
- Follow Sang Run Road for about a mile and turn left onto Hoyes Run Road just after one of the ponds on your left (the street sign isn't very prominent; go slow so you can read the street signs).
- Follow Hoyes Run Road several miles until it ends at a stop sign. At the stop, turn left onto Oakland-Sang Run Road.
- This road runs steeply uphill for about a mile and you want to watch for Stockslager Road to your left as the road begins to level out. Don't take the first left onto Shingle Camp Road. Instead, take the second left, onto Stockslager Road.
- Follow Stockslager Road for about 3 miles, then turn right onto Penelacres Lane. (If you pass the big Sandy Beach sign, you've gone about a hundred feet too far.)
- We are the second house on the right on Penelacres Lane (94 Penelacres Lane). Brown shingle house with a U-shaped driveway. Pull in either side, park your car, and mellow out.
Be particularly watchful of creative Maryland State Police speedtraps … they have moving radar and laser guns and take delight in preying on unwary tourists speeding through their domain. Also be careful for deer! “They're suicidal, and if you try to go around them, they run into you anyway.” - Rob.

Here's the Deep Creek Times, the self-described online source to Deep Creek Lake. Me, I'd describe it as an example of hideous page design, but you might find something interesting to do among its pages. (Update: You know, I've kept that text in there for, what, three years? And it's still true!)
Deep Creek Hydro is the web site for the lake's hydroelectric power plant. This web site gives you, among other things, real-time readings of the lake's water level and an indicator of whether the generator is on.
Don't forget to bring:
- your favourite drinks (alcoholic and/or non-alcoholic) and snacks
- sunscreen
- swimwear and towel
- warm clothing—it gets pretty cold at night
- the usual stuff you might forget, like a toothbrush and pajamas
